A horrific goalkeeping error from Raphael Schäfer nearly cost Nürnberg all three points as they finally won the Bavarian derby against Augsburg at the SGL Arena on Friday.
The visitors took the lead against the run of play in the 21st minute when Japanese midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake curled home the opener following a counter-attack.
Despite dominating possession, Augsburg were making hard work of penetrating the visitors' deep backline, but levelled the scores courtesy of a stroke of good fortune.
Starting on the right wing, André Hahn crossed to Tobias Werner in the box, who headed straight at Schäfer and the Nürnberg goalkeeper seemed to make the save.
But rather than catch or block away the attempt, Schäfer spilled the ball through his legs and into his own goal.
However, Alexander Esswein grabbed the winner for Nürnberg in the 54th minute with his low free-kick.
"You've got to chuckle when you see that goal. I'll definitely be part of the year's highlight package now," Schäfer told the club's website.
"I switched off when the header came in and was already thinking about where to throw the ball and sometimes you can end up throwing the ball in your own net.
"Esswein saved me with his goal."
