Goal of the day: Andros Townsend (QPR) vs Sunderland
Table of Contents
Andros Townsend notched his first goal for Queens Park Rangers in spectacular fashion as the Hoops secured a 3-1 home win against Sunderland on Saturday.
Sunderland went ahead in the 20th minute when Steven Fletcher side-footed home from close range, but that lead lasted just 10 minutes with Loïc Rémy firing home.
However, it was the home side who claimed the crucial third goal of the contest and it was a special strike.
José Bosingwa's lofted free-kick was punched clear by Simon Mignolet only as far as Junior Hoilett, who again put the ball back into the 18-yard box.
That was cleared also but only as far as Townsend roughly 30 yards from goal and the 21-year-old, on-loan from Tottenham Hotspur, took a touch with his chest before striking an exquisite left-footed strike into the corner of the net.
The three points were sealed in the final minute as substitute Jermaine Jenas, another January signing from Spurs, smashed home from edge of the box.
"It was a great finish form Andros," QPR boss Harry Redknapp told Sky Sports.
Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill added on safc.com: "It's a wonder-goal from them to take the game to 2-1."
