British oddsmaker Coral is offering odds of 1000/1 on Real Madrid coach José Mourinho being the next Pope.
Following the announcement of Pope Benedict XVI's upcoming resignation, people have been placing online bets on who will become the next leader of the Catholic Church.
And while names such as Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson and Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze have emerged as the consensus favorites, several figures from the world of football have appeared toward the bottom of the boards.
The oddsmakers at Coral put Mourinho's chances at 1,000 to 1, the same odds as U2 frontman Bono or Bob Geldof.
AC Milan star Mario Balotelli is a 5,000-to-1 longshot according to Stan James, another UK oddsmaker, which lists Francesco Totti at the same price.
Technically, any baptized Catholic male is eligible for the position, although historically the Pope has been chosen from among the College of Cardinals.
