Goal of the day: Papiss Demba Cissé (Newcastle) vs Southampton
Table of Contents
Papiss Demba Cissé produced a moment of magic on Sunday as his spectacular goal led Newcastle United to a thrilling 4-2 home win against Southampton.
A topsy-turvy game saw the Magpies fall behind early on to Morgan Schneiderlin's strike, but they soon imposed themselves on the clash, with Moussa Sissoko netting his third goal in just four Premier League appearances from close range.
And 10 minutes later, the home side took the lead with one of the best goals St James' Park has seen for a while.
Stand-in goalkeeper Rob Elliot smacked a long punt forward that was and missed by Luke Shaw and Jonás Gutiérrez.
And as the loose ball bounced up 30 yards out, Cissé smashed a stunning dipping half-volley which flew in off the underside of the bar.
Rickie Lambert produced a fine finish to put the Saints level, but a Yohan Cabaye penalty and a bizarre own goal from Jos Hooiveld ensured a full-house on Tyneside went home happy.
"That goal will certainly get in his top 10," said Toon boss Alan Pardew.
"As soon as he hit it you sensed that it was in. And for sure, the net ripples. He's got that in him, he can get all types of goals. But that was a really great one today."
