Goal of the day: Yevhen Konoplianka (Ukraine) vs England
Table of Contents
A wonder strike by Yevhen Konoplianka nearly earned Ukraine a memorable victory against England at Wembley.
Oleg Blohkin's men took the lead before the break through Konopolyanka's rocket.
Joleon Lescott gave the ball away to Andriy Yarmolenko and Ukraine worked the ball intelligently from right to left before it found its way to Konoplyanka.
The Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk man then stepped inside Steven Gerrard before unleashing a stunning effort from 25 yards and into the far corner of the net.
Gerrard looked a little leaden-footed in his attempts to tackle Konoplyanka in what was a particularly bad night for the England captain, who was sent off late on having picked up two yellow cards.
And England looked set to suffer a damaging defeat until Frank Lampard came to their rescue with a 87th-minute penalty to give the Three Lions a valuable point.
"We went a goal down to a wonder goal," England manager Roy Hodgson told ITV.
"But I was really pleased with the way we kept tidy, kept trying and didn't resort to any hopeful long balls.
"Had we lost it would have been very harsh, we certainly deserved at least a draw."
