After a goalless first half, which saw Javier Hernández miss an early penalty, United broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half through Paul Scholes.

The Red Devils increased the lead on 63 minutes when Büttner drilled a ball across the face of goal and Hernández beat the offside trap to flick the ball home.

Büttner deserved a goal for his lung-bursting runs down the left-hand side and one of those runs finally paid off three minutes later.

With Patrice Evra looking down from the stands, the 23 year-old Dutchman slalomed his way past the challenges of Emmerson Boyce, James McCarthy and Iván Ramis.

The ball almost went out of play on the byline but instead of letting it go out, he smashed a shot which Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi somehow let squirm under his body at the near post.

Nick Powell then came off the bench to make it 4-0 on 82 minutes with another debut strike.

"If I play I want to let Sir Alex Ferguson see that I can do a good job. Today I think I did that," Büttner, a £4million signing from Vitesse Arnhem, told MUTV.

"I'm happy that I can play my first minutes in the first team. It's great that we won and I scored and gave a pass for Chicharito to score. It's a dream for me.

"I'm happy today. I've scored my first goal in my first game and I'll never forget it."
