Robin van Persie is set to complete his move from Arsenal to Manchester United after the Premier League rivals reached an agreement over the sale of the striker.
The Dutchman's contract expires in June 2013 and he made it clear he would not be signing an extension with the Gunners because he felt the club's ambitions did not match his own.
Van Persie's announcement sparked interest from United, Premier League champions Manchester City, as well as Italian giants Juventus.
But Sir Alex Ferguson's side moved to the head of the queue and have now reached an agreement with the North London club.
Van Persie is now due to travel to Manchester on Thursday to finalise personal terms and undergo a medical with the Red Devils before putting pen to paper on an anticipated four-year deal.
"Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement with Arsenal Football Club for the transfer of Robin van Persie," read a statement on United's official website.
"The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course."
Arsenal issued a similar statement which added: "Van Persie will travel to Manchester on Thursday in order to agree personal terms and complete a medical ahead of the proposed move."
No financial details were disclosed by either United or Arsenal, although it is believed to be around the £20 million mark, with further payments to the Gunners depending upon success in the future.
Provided the transfer goes through smoothly, van Persie would be the biggest deal United have done since Dimitar Berbatov's club record £30.75 million move from Tottenham Hotspur in 2008.
