A superb free-kick from Gastón Ramírez inspired Uruguay to a narrow 2-1 win over an impressive UAE side in the London Olympics football Group A game on Thursday.
Playing in front of a near capacity crowd at Old Trafford, the UAE was the better side for much of the first half against a South American team seen as a medal contender.
Ismail Matar gave the Asian side a deserved lead after 20 minutes when he latched onto a through ball, beat the off-side trap and placed into an open goal.
Uruguay got back in the game with four minutes to go in the half through a brilliant free-kick from Ramírez.
Luis Suárez was brought down a few yards from the edge of the penalty area and Ramírez whipped a left-footed free-kick into the top right-hand corner of the net.
Half-time substitute Nicolás Lodeiro then fired home in clinical fashion after the break to give Óscar Tabárez's side all three point.
