Footage has emerged via Spanish TV station Cuatro showing Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas talking to an official behind his goal to put Italy out of their misery during the Euro 2012 final.
With the Italians trailing 4-0, down to 10 men and completely out of steam, the Spain captain had seen enough.
Turning to the goal-line official, Casillas pleaded: "Ref! Ref! Respect for the rival. Respect for Italy. It's already 4-0."
It was an act of kindness. But a needless one.
The Real Madrid star did not know that the three minutes were over as he made his request, and the referee blew the final whistle to end Italy's misery.
