Goal of the day: Lee Nguyen (New England) vs Whitecaps
Table of Contents
New England Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen scored an unbelievable goal from distance in a 4-1 home win over Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday.
Vancouver striker Eric Hassli capped off a neat team move with his third goal in four appearances in all competitions to give the visitors a fifth minute lead.
But New England replied less than a minute later through Nguyen and romped for the remainder of the night with goals Saer Sene and Shalrie Joseph putting the game to bed before the break.
Vancouver perked up a bit after the break, but Nguyen gave the Gillette Stadium crowd a jolt in the 72nd minute with a stunning long-distance strike.
The 25-year-old Vietnamese/American settled Chris Tierney's short throw-in near the corner of the box and after letting the ball bounce, unleashed a 25-yard volley that arched into the far corner of the net.
"Chris threw me a perfect ball, just into space," said Nguyen. "I took a touch and I just wanted to take a shot and put it in the corner. That's just how it worked out."
