Blackburn frustrated the Red Devils right up until the last 10 minutes at Ewood Park, when Valencia opened the scoring with a stunner.

The Ecuador wide-man received the ball wide on the right, taking on his defender before powering a swerving right-foot shot into the corner.

If Valencia had meant it, it would be an unbelievable strike, though questions will be asked of Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson as to how he allowed the effort past him.

"When he fired in that shot, the thing is, if you don't try to shoot then you never know if you can score," United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said after the game.

"Whether it was a cross or a shot it doesn't matter because it was hit with such incredible power – and that is why it was so important."
