With Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh going away to the Africa Cup of Nations, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger opted to bring back Henry on a two-month loan from New York Red Bulls.

And with the possibility of a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Leeds, Wenger gave Henry his second Arsenal debut. He didn't disappoint.

A mere 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute, the Frenchman effortlessly broke the scoreless deadlock with the only goal of match.

Henry ghosted past Leeds defenders from an Alex Song pass before coolly slotted the ball into the right-hand corner, sending Arsenal fans into ecstasy and sending the player's all-time goal record for the club to 227.

"When he was in this position, I thought, 'Oh, that's your angle, but it's a bit too close'," Wenger said after the game.

"That's where it surprised me. He didn't force the shot. I thought he'd take a very strong inside shot but he made it look easy.

"I thought he was a bit too far to the left but he always had that special finishing. That was the Thierry Henry finishing."

Henry added: "I never thought I'd play for Arsenal again, let alone score the winner.

"I love the club and I hope it won't be the last one. The feeling I had when I scored was amazing. I am enjoying the club as a fan.

"I will always remember tonight. I don't know why but, when it comes to Arsenal, something happens with me. Sometimes in a bad way but most of the way in history in a good way."

Henry will be available for a six-week spell at Arsenal which will take in matches against Manchester United and, in the Champions League, AC Milan, possibly even the showdown with arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur on February 26.
