Liverpool earned the bragging rights in an incident packed Merseyside derby after a 2-0 triumph over ten-man Everton at Goodison Park.
The hosts were reduced to ten men after 23 minutes when Jack Rodwell was controversially sent off for a sliding tackle on Luis Suárez.
With an extra man, Liverpool took control of the match and they could even afford to miss a penalty just before the break as Suárez was brought down by Phil Jagielka, but Dirk Kuyt could not beat Tim Howard.
Liverpool finally made their numerical advantage count 19 minutes from time when Andy Carroll swept home José Enrique's left-wing cross.
And Suárez wrapped up the win on 82 minutes when he capitalised on some poor defending from Sylvain Distin.
