Alex Frei's late penalty earned FC Basel a 2-1 victory over Champions League newcomer Oţelul Galaţi at St Jakob-Park.
Fabian Frei fired the hosts in front after 39 minutes, but Marius Pena hit back for Oţelul just before the hour mark with a close-range finish.
Oţelul were reduced to ten men six minutes from time when Adrian Sălăgeanu was shown a red card for bringing down Marco Streller inside the box with Frei firing the resulting penalty into the bottom left corner.
The home side also finished with ten men when Benjamin Huggel received his marching orders with two minutes remaining for a second bookable offense.
