The 35-year-old spent 10 years with Los Merengues in a glittering career, during which he won La Liga four times and the Champions League twice.

His spell in the Spanish capital will be remembered for the Galácticos era, when they signed players such as Luís Figo and Zinedine Zidane for record-breaking fees.

Now at Blackburn, Salgado has seen City spend similar amounts of money, most recently for Atlético Madrid star Sergio Agüero.

But the Spaniard believes the Citizens will never be able to match up to the Spanish giants due to their lack of history.

Salgado told reporters: "City need to win trophies now as quickly as possible.

"They have the money but the history of Real is different.

"Expectations in Madrid are different, because they have such a great past. They have been the best team in the world in the last century.

"If you ask a player to sign for Real Madrid or Manchester City, it is a different question.

"If you sign for Real Madrid, you sign for perhaps the best club in the world in terms of history. Manchester City is the most powerful club in terms of money."
