Eight members of the Mexican national team have been sent home from the Copa America training camp after allegedly bringing prostitutes to their rooms at the team hotel.
The guilty players are Jonathan dos Santos, Israel Jiménez, Néstor Vidrio, Marco Fabian, Jorge Hernández, Javier Cortés, David Cabrera and Néstor Calderón.
The eight were handed a six-month suspension from the national team and also hit with a US $4,100 fine for breaking team rules.
The violation of team rules was only discovered after some members of the squad reported that some personal items, including laptops, iPads, mobile phones and cash, had been stolen from their rooms.
After an investigation, CCTV footage provided by the hotel subsequently showed women entering the rooms of some Mexican players.
"I am not going into details of what happened," Hector González Iñárritu, the director of the national team selection, told a press conference.
"The rules were broken, the code of discipline was broken and I have to act.
"The players confessed. They are very hurt, very sorry and they have said they are sorry to their fans."
It is not the first time that Mexican players have been caught with prostitutes, with players suspended and fined last September after they were allegedly celebrating a friendly win over Colombia.
