Manchester United earned the one point they needed to clinch their record 19th Premier League title with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers.
The triumph was almost assured before kick-off at Ewood Park but the point means they are now seven above Chelsea who have just two games left to play.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson added: "It's not so much passing Liverpool.
"That thing about knocking Liverpool off their perch, I don't think I actually said it!
"But it's more important that United are the best team in the country in terms of winning titles."
Ryan Giggs has played in every one of Ferguson's 12 Premier League-winning sides, in 1993 as one of the original Fergie's Fledglings.
The Welshman said: "Twenty years ago we were nowhere near Liverpool.
"It's great credit to the club, the manager and the players and it's a good feeling to be ahead of our greatest rivals."
Mexican striker Javier Hernández has been a revelation this season, scoring 20 goals in his first season at Old Trafford.
"It's really great," Hernández said. "I am really happy and it is more than I imagined. I dreamed of this moment and it is fantastic to be at this club."

United's 19th title is one more than Liverpool, who won the last of their 18 league titles in 1990, and former Everton striker Wayne Rooney said: "For me personally, being an Everton fan, to win a 19th title is special."
