Glasgow Celtic manager Neil Lennon was attacked by a fan during his side's Scottish Premier League game at Hearts on Wednesday night.
The incident happened after Celtic striker Gary Hooper put the visitors two goals ahead in a match they won 3-0.
Before the game could restart, a fan clambered from the Hearts section of the main stand onto the pitch and charged towards Lennon who was on the touchline.
An astonishing melee ensued and the lunatic was eventually marched up the tunnel by police but that was not the end of the trouble as some fans in the Celtic section of the ground appeared to fight with stewards and police.
"The SPL deplores the actions of the individual involved," SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster said in a statement.
"This type of behaviour has no place in Scottish football.
"The SPL will undertake a full investigation and will be reviewing reports from the SPL match delegate, match officials, the police and the clubs."
Lennon's assistant Johan Mjällby told Sky Sports 1: "What happened to Neil, it's a dark day for Scottish football. It's an absolute disgrace. I've never seen anything like it.
"Of course Neil has had the death threat and obviously what can you do?
"The guy could've had anything in his hand. It was shocking."
Kris Commons, who netted the third goal before sent off for a second bookable offence, added: "I'm lost for words. It shouldn't be in the game or anyway near football.
"A manager being attacked on the sideline is outrageous."
Lennon has found himself under the spotlight for the wrong reasons in recent weeks after he had been the target of two intercepted bombs last month.
