Real Madrid coach José Mourinho on Friday angered the Spanish press after refusing to speak at a press conference prior to Saturday's El Clásico with Barcelona.
"José Mourinho will not answer any question," a club spokesman said at the start of the news conference.
The press didn't like this decision and around half to three-quarters of the press centre left as Mourinho was coming in.
Mourinho sat next to Aitor Karanka as the assistant answered questions at a media conference broadcast on live television and radio.
"Whenever the coach speaks his words are blown out of proportion," Karanka said. "He doesn't want that, nor does he want to be the one who heats things up before the match.
"He's preferred to stay quiet to avoid misunderstandings and it's not the first time I've spoken, it's a way of working."
Karanka rejected suggestions that Mourinho's refusal to talk was disrespectful of Real fans or would soil the club's image.
He added: "What the fans want is for Real Madrid to be where it is today.
"They want a coach who works hard every day, who demonstrates that he is 100 percent with the club, independent of whether or not he speaks."
