Under the terms of the deal, which still needs to be approved by regulators, DiBenedetto's group will own 60 percent of the Giallorossi, with their share of the club being valued at €70.3 million.

In addition, Italian bank UniCredit, which last year became co-owner of Roma following a debt-for-equity swap with the Sensi family, would retain 40 percent of the new Roma ownership company.

"Good things don't come easy," Di Benedetto told reporters in Boston. "I never felt that I would give up on the quest for this team."

"I didn't expect all this attention from the fans and media. I knew how important soccer was in Italy and the great passion of the Romans, which is one of the reasons we put so much into this project.

"These negotiations were very important. I love Roma and want to do something great for this city. I am proud of my origins."

DiBenedetto, 61, is one of approximately 13 limited partners in the Boston Red Sox baseball team ownership group.
