Third-placed Valencia suffered a night to forget at the La Romareda as they were stunned 4-0 by Real Zaragoza.
Zaragoza took the lead after just four minutes with a Jiří Jarošík header and Ander Herrera added a second five minutes before half-time.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors in the 65th minute as Marius Stankevičius was shown a second yellow card for fouling Nicolás Bertolo inside the area.
Gabi made no mistake from the resulting penalty and the Zaragoza captain capped the rout 10 minutes later after drawing his team's second penalty from David Albelda.
