Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has spoken of his "heartbreak" following Fernando Torres' decision to quit the club for Premier League rivals Chelsea.
Torres' departure left many Liverpool fans unhappy although the poor form he showed while cutting an unhappy figure this season made the £50 million fee received for his services appear to be a good deal for the Reds.
"I was heartbroken. Absolutely gutted. But I also called him after he left," Gerrard told the Daily Mail.
"There are no hard feelings. I built up a relationship with Fernando and became his friend. He scored some fantastic goals and I have fantastic memories. I enjoyed playing with him. So you can't go from one extreme to another and fall out with him, start criticising him.
"But he will also understand how I feel. Fernando is a bright person and he will understand that the Liverpool fans are upset as well.
"I felt he could have helped me and the other players achieve more success at Liverpool. But listen. Every man is their own man and they have to make their own decisions. And you have to respect that decision. I was just sad to see it happen."

Gerrard insists that he holds no bad feelings towards the striker but believes had Torres stayed, he could have helped the skipper win silverware for the club.
