Manchester United maintained a five-point advantage over Arsenal in the title race with a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

United needed just 49 seconds to take the lead as Wayne Rooney latched onto Edwin van der Sar's long clearance to control beautifully and lashed the ball beyond Brad Friedel.

And Rooney made it 2-0 on the brink of half-time, slotting home from close range after Nani had crossed the ball across the penalty area.

Villa gave themselves brief hope early in the second-half when Darren Bent tucked away Stewart Downing's pass, but Nemanja Vidić sealed the spoils for the Red Devils with a powerful volley five minutes later.
