Fernando Torres hands in transfer request

Fernando Torres' long term future at Liverpool hangs in the balance after the Merseyside outfit revealed they had received a transfer request from the striker.
Speculation had been rife about the 26-year-old's future after the club turned down an offer from Chelsea for the Spain international.
It is understood the Blues are willing to make Torres the club's highest paid player — eclipsing the terms John Terry and Frank Lampard are on.
However, Liverpool management released a statement on Friday night confirming Torres would be forced to commit to his contract at Anfield.
"Fernando Torres tonight submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool," the statement on the club's official website read.
"Fernando is under a long-term contract and the club expects him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement."
The timing of Torres' request is odd, just three days before the close of the transfer window.
Even if Chelsea return with an improved bid the Merseysiders will reject it and then can stall and frustrate any other attempts to manufacture a move, knowing there is very little time left for pressure to build.
