The Friends of Real Madrid Foundation took the initiative to try to improve the morale of the workers, who have been trapped 700 metres underground at the San Jose mine since August 5.

Santiago Mayor, Pablo Zalaquett, and children of the Friends of Real Madrid Foundation presented the shirt imprinted with the message "Strength Miners" to Minister of Mining, Laurence Golborne.

The gift also includes photo albums of players as well as an invitations inviting them to one of their games.

"It is a gift that comes from the heart of Real Madrid," Real president Florentino Pérez told realmadrid.com

"That is a testament of our solidarity, support and affection for them because of the great challenge they are undertaking.

"It is also a recognition of their valour, their organised spirit and their serenity in the face of danger.

"We want them to visit Real Madrid City, the Santiago Bernabéu, to step on our pitch and to receive an emotional ovation from our fans."

Earlier this month Barcelona striker David Villa, whose family have worked in mining for generations, sent two signed jerseys to the 33 miners.
