A Dimitar Berbatov hat-trick ensured Manchester United enjoyed a pulsating 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

A first half shy on chances was livened up four minutes before the break when Berbatov easily held off his marker Fernando Torres to head home Ryan Giggs' corner at the near post.

Berbatov then produced a moment of magic for his second goal when he controlled Nani's cross with his first touch and then executed a brilliant overhead kick with his second.

But Jonny Evans' mis-timed challenge on Torres allowed Steven Gerrard to score from the penalty spot on 64 minutes and six minutes later the visiting captain equalised for Liverpool by curling home a free-kick from the edge of the area.

Berbatov was not to be denied, though, as he headed home John O'Shea's cross on 84 minutes to became the first United player to net a hat-trick against Liverpool in 64 years.
