Asamoah Gyan scored three minutes into extra-time to lead Ghana to a 2-1 victory over the United States in the last 16 of the World Cup at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Kevin-Prince Boateng put Ghana into a fifth minute lead when he stripped the ball from Ricardo Clark, charged forward with purpose before unleashing a low drive that beat Tim Howard at his near post.

Bob Bradley's troops drew level in the 62nd minute when Landon Donovan converted a penalty after Clint Dempsey had been fouled by Jonathan Mensah inside the area.

But Gyan got the winning goal for the Black Stars three minutes into extra-time when he superbly kept his balance to smash an unstoppable shot over the head of Howard.

The USA attempted a desperate all-out assault in the final few minutes of extra-time, but it just was not to be.
