Two former England stars, Gareth Southgate and Matt Le Tissier, has tipped Adam Johnson to force his way into to the England team in the World Cup this summer.

Manchester City winger Johnson won his first cap as a late substitute during the 3-1 win over Mexico at Wembley on Monday night.

Now he has one more opportunity in Sunday's clash with Japan in Graz to stake his claim to be on the plane for South Africa as part of Fabio Capello's final 23.

Speaking at ITV's launch of their World Cup coverage, Southgate said: "Adam can beat people from a standing start and can dribble between people, which could make the difference in a tight international game.

"He has also finished the season strongly with Manchester City.

"I would take him if I was manager, along with Joe Cole. They might be wild cards but you could throw them into a game to open it up."

Southampton legend Le Tissier added in The Sun: "I think Adam Johnson will go.

"He only got five minutes against Mexico the other night because Capello does not want people to see too much of him. He wants a little secret weapon up his sleeve."
