Schalke 04 have confirmed that defender Christoph Metzelder will join the club from Real Madrid at the end of the season on a free transfer.
The 29-year-old, who has had three injury-ravaged years with the Spanish giants, has signed a contract until the summer of 2013 at his new club.
Metzelder moved to Los Blancos from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2007, but his time in the Spanish capital has been plagued by injuries and he has never been able to hold down a regular starting slot.
A statement on Schalke's official website read: "A World Cup and a European Championship runner-up will soon play for the Royal Blues: Christoph Metzelder is joining Schalke from Real Madrid for the coming season and receives a three-year contract until 30 June 2013."
Metzelder, who has 47 caps for Germany, was a regular for Die Mannschaft at World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008, but is unlikely to be considered by coach Joachim Löw for the tournament in South Africa this summer.
