Aston Villa lost ground in the battle for fourth place as they were held to a dire stalemate by Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
Martin O'Neill's men created few clear chances and did not deserve to earn a victory that would have seen them close the gap on sixth-placed Liverpool.
The closest they came to making a breakthrough was three minutes after half-time when Stewart Downing's shot inadvertently deflected off team-mate John Carew but hit the side-netting with Thomas Sørensen wrong-footed.
