Steve Bruce has revealed the moment he almost signed Chelsea and England captain John Terry during his days in charge of Huddersfield Town.
The Sunderland boss has claimed that, 10 years ago, Chelsea were willing to offload Terry and agreed to sell the player to Huddersfield for £750,000.
JT was on loan at Nottingham Forest at the time, and it was on a coaching course at the City Ground that Bruce spotted the centre-half's potential.
Bruce told the press: "I went to do my coaching badges at Nottingham Forest.
"David Platt was Forest's manager at the time and he invited me and Gianluca Vialli up there.
"It was a cold miserable afternoon and I saw John Terry in his short sleeves rolling his shirt up – he was on loan there. I thought, 'Christ, he'll do me. I like him'.
"I bid £750,000 for him, it was a lot of money for me then, and Chelsea accepted it.
"But the boy didn't want to leave Chelsea at the time. I was close but at the death he didn't want to go.
"I brought Chris Lucketti from Bury instead, and no disrespect but he wasn’t John Terry."
