The Italian tactician was appointed on a three-and-a-half-year contract on Saturday, with Mark Hughes relieved of his duties after Saturday's 4-3 victory over Sunderland.

And Mancini has wasted no time in setting out his ambitions, with Champions League qualification at the top of the his agenda.

He told a press conference: "My target is the top four. Next season we want to win the title.

"I believe in my ability. I believe I can do a good job because we have good players and I think we can reach the target I’ve been set.

"My squad always plays to win."

Mancini is City's 17th manager in 20 years after Hughes paid the price for failing to meet goals that had been agreed with the club's mega-rich owner Sheikh Mansour.

City have set a minimum target of 70 points for the season and that will be the least Mancini is expected to achieve.

Mancini added: "If you manage in Italy, pressure is normal, so that won’t be a problem for me. I stayed at Inter Milan for four years, which was a record.

"People have said I have no Premier League experience, but they forget I played in the Premier League for Leicester City and I have watched the league on TV.

"I’ve been living in London and I have seen a lot of games. Anyway, I think football is the same wherever you go in the world.

"I want to stay for many years and make a contribution by winning many trophies."
