Liverpool climbed back up to seventh in the Premier League table after a much-needed 2-0 win over 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
The hosts were struggling to break down their opponents until Stephen Ward was sent off in the 51st minute for a second bookable offence, although the decision was surrounded in controversy.
At first referee Andre Marriner booked Christoph Berra for Ward's foul on Lucas Leiva but after several protests from the Reds players, the West Midlands official consulted his linesman for the second time and eventually sent the left-back off.
And Liverpool took full advantage of the decision as first Steven Gerrard slammed home a bullet header on 62 minutes before Yossi Benayoun made certain of the points with a deflected effort eight minutes later.
