Juventus blew open the Serie A title race by defeating leaders Inter Milan 2-1 in an enthralling Derby d'Italia at the Stadio Olimpico.

A free-kick that appeared to deflect in off Inter defender Lúcio put the home side ahead in the 21st minute.

Inter coach José Mourinho was furious the free-kick had been given in the first place and he sarcastically applauded referee Massimiliano Saccani, who sent him to the stands.

Samuel Eto'o brought Inter level five minutes later with a header from the edge of the box following a cross from Dejan Stanković.

But Claudio Marchisio put Juve back in front in the 58th minute when he showed incredible composure to first skip past Walter Samuel and then lift the ball beyond Júlio César.

Felipe Melo was dismissed late on after an incident with Mario Balotelli, who was whistled by home fans but not racially abused as had been feared.
