Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini is in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a motorbike accident in East London.

Cudicini's BMW superbike was in collision with a Ford Fiesta on Forest Road, Walthamstow at 10.30am on Thursday.

The female driver and passenger in the Fiesta did not require hospital treatment but the vehicle was very badly damaged in the crash.

"Carlo has fractured his wrists and injured his pelvis after being involved in a road accident this morning," read an official statement from Tottenham.

"He has been admitted to hospital and undergone scans under the supervision of club medical staff.

"The club will update supporters on Carlo as soon as there is any further information."

It remained unclear how long Cudicini would be out but even though his future looked bleak, England goalkeeping legend Gordon Banks sounded a note of support.

The 1966 World Cup-winning keeper knows exactly what it is like to fight back from a career-threatening injury to play again. He lost his right eye in a car crash in October 1972 but went on to play in America's top-flight.

Banks told The Sun: "I have always admired Carlo and regard him as an excellent keeper.

"My advice to him would be to take all the time he needs to get over the injuries and, hopefully, they will heal enough for him to play again.

"I played until I was 40 so there's still plenty of time for him.

"Being injured in a motoring accident is not the best thing in the world and I'd like to wish him all the best. I hope he can pull through it."
