Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been handed a three-match ban for the stamp that left Robin van Persie with a bloodied face.

The ban means he will miss Sunday's Manchester derby against United, Wednesday's Carling Cup meeting with Fulham and next Monday's league game against West Ham.

An FA statement said: "A Regulatory Commission today considered the charge of violent conduct issued against Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor under the fast-track disciplinary procedure, following an incident with Robin van Persie during their fixture against Arsenal on the 12 September.

"Taking into consideration Mr Adebayor's acceptance of the charge of violent conduct the Regulatory Commission have ordered that he serve a three-match suspension from all football, commencing Thursday 17 September."

The Togo international, who left the Gunners for City in a £25 million deal this summer, clashed with his former team-mate van Persie during last weekend's match against Arsenal at the City of Manchester Stadium.

As van Persie slipped to the turf, Adebayor appeared to kick out and caught him on the side of the head.

Adebayor, though, maintains there was no malice in his challenge and has since apologised to his former teammate.

He said in The Sun: "I am sorry Robin got hurt but I can't regret something I did not mean to do.

"Anybody who knows me knows I would not set out to hurt anybody and I would especially not mean to hurt an old team-mate.

"I really am glad Robin was OK because I know my stud was close to his eye but there was really nothing I could have done - there was no way I could have got out of the way in time."
