Aston Villa ended Liverpool's 31-match unbeaten home league record with a deserved 3-1 victory at Anfield.
The damage was done before half time with Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva nodding into his own goal and goalkeeper Pepe Reina beaten by a header from Villa's Curtis Davies.
Fernando Torres then offered the Reds a lifeline on 72 minutes, as he coolly rounded of a well-worked move down the left.
However, Steven Gerrard felled Nigel Reo-Coker in the box three minutes later and Ashley Young stepped up to the spot, coolly sent Reina the wrong way.
