Manchester City completed on Monday the £15 million signing of Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn Rovers.

The Paraguay international underwent a stringent three-hour medical at a private hospital in Whalley Range and has now sealed his switch to Eastlands.

His fee will increase to £18 million with appearances and achievements over the course of a five-year contract believed to be worth £80,000 a week.

The 27-year-old has been a long-term target of City manager Mark Hughes, who signed him for £3.8 million from Bayern Munich in 2007 and was rewarded with an impressive 23 goals in 43 games for Blackburn.

"Well it took a very long time to get me here and now everything is done I am very happy and delighted with everything and looking forward to the season," Santa Cruz told Sky Sports News.

"It's very good I know the way he (Hughes) trains and the people who were with him and the fact that he's a winner and he wants to perform better and better.

"So having him here has helped me a lot to decide and also of course that it is a great club with great fans I am looking forward to playing games here."

Santa Cruz is Hughes' second summer signing after the £12 million arrival of Gareth Barry from Aston Villa last month.

"It was really important that we signed him because it's an area of the squad that we have needed to address for some time," Hughes told the club's official website, www.mcfc.co.uk. "The qualities Roque brings will be of great benefit.

"His ability in the air and his physical presence are things we have been missing. But he also has technical ability and good pace for a big man. He is a very good player and one I know well from our time at Blackburn."
