Chelsea have confirmed Carlo Ancelotti has signed a three-year contract to become the club's new manager.
Ancelotti, who turns 50 on 10th June, had long been expected to replace Guus Hiddink at Stamford Bridge and his appointment was sealed on Monday morning, just hours after he stepped down as AC Milan boss on Sunday.
A club statement said: "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce that Carlo Ancelotti has agreed to become our new manager.
"He has signed a three-year contract and will start on July 1, 2009.
"Carlo was the outstanding candidate for the job. He has proved over a long period his ability to build teams that challenged for, and have been successful in, major domestic and European competitions.
"He also had a highly successful playing career in those competitions and therefore brings unparalleled all round experience to the job.
"We are sure everybody at Chelsea will give him a warm welcome and we are all looking forward to working with him."
And speaking after his last game with Milan in a 2-0 win at Fiorentina, Ancelotti said: "In agreement with the club, we have decided to terminate the contract a year early.
"I think it ends in the right way and is probably the right choice for both of us."
The former Parma and Juventus boss won the Champions League twice and the Scudetto during his eight-year spell with the Rossoneri.
