Premier League round-up: One point to go, Red Devils
Table of Contents
Reigning champions Manchester United grabbed a 2-1 win at Wigan to move within a point of their 18th top-flight crown and third successive Premier League triumph.
A draw against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday will allow the Red Devils to win the trophy in front of their own fans - something which has only happened once in their previous 10 league triumphs.
Wigan should have been ahead inside two minutes during an open contest, but Antonio Valencia, who heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford as a summer replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo if he leaves for Real Madrid, spurned a glorious opportunity after racing away from the United defence.
But the visitors broke the deadlock on 28 minutes when Hugo Rodallega outmuscled Nemanja Vidić before powering a left-foot shot between Edwin van der Sar and the left post.
With the momentum continuing to favour the home side, Sir Alex Ferguson introduced Carlos Tévez just before the hour. And it proved to be an inspired change as less then three minutes later he diverted Michael Carrick's low shot into the net with a deliberate flick of his heel.
And Carrick sealed another comeback win when he dispatched a glorious shot into the corner from the edge of the box with just four minutes left on the clock.
