Aston Villa's injury-plagued captain Martin Laursen has announced his retirement at the age of 31 due to persistent injuries.
The Danish defender has suffered from long-standing problems with his knees and has decided to hang up his boots rather than undergo another major operation.
"The retirement of the lionheart defender will be a huge loss to the players, the manager and the fans," said the club in a statement.
Laursen, who made 91 appearances and scored 11 goals in his time at Villa Park, has been out of action since suffering a knee injury while playing for Villa against West Brom in January.
"We've missed his defensive qualities, we've missed his goals at the other end, but mainly we've missed his influence in the team," manager Martin O'Neill told BBC Radio Five Live.
"Over the last couple of seasons the influence he has exerted has really been terrific."
