A Manchester United supporter has been stabbed in Rome ahead of tonight's Champions League final against Barcelona.

Greg Wheldon, 34, was attacked close to his hotel near the Vatican by four people in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Sky Sports News reports.

It was further reported the man received stab wounds to the left leg and was later discharged from hospital.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester police, which has a dozen officers in Rome for the final, said he had received reports of a stabbing and an investigation had begun.

Police have warned the estimated 30,000 United fans in the Italian capital – around 10,000 of whom who have travelled without tickets – to avoid areas of the city popular with hardline supporters of AS Roma, known as Ultras.

Supporters from a series of English clubs, also including Liverpool, Arsenal and Middlesbrough, have been stabbed over the past decade while their sides have played in Rome, most recently an Arsenal fan in March this year.
