Barcelona destroyed arch-rivals Real Madrid 6-2 at the Bernabéu to put themselves on the verge of a first La Liga title in three years.

The hosts went ahead against the run of play after 14 minutes as Sergio Ramos burst past Éric Abidal to cross into the area from the right, where Gonzalo Higuaín rose unmarked to head home his 19th league goal of the season.

Yet within four minutes Barcelona were level. Lionel Messi's weighed chip evaded Ramos and found Thierry Henry who coolly rolled his shot past Iker Casillas.

Henry was also involved in the goal that put Barça ahead soon after, winning a free-kick to the left of the area that Xavi curled into the area and onto the head of the unmarked Carles Puyol, who headed home for his first goal of the season.

And after 36 minutes Xavi caught Lassana Diarra in possession, and Messi jumped on the loose ball to go clear on goal, picking his spot to flick a left-footed roller past Casillas and inside the far post.

Ramos gave Real a glimmer of hope when he headed home Arjen Robben's free kick at the far post on 56 minutes.

But Henry restored the two-goal cushion two minutes later as the Frenchman beat the offside trap and reached Xavi's through ball before the onrushing Casillas well outside the area to volley past the goalkeeper into an empty goal.

The hosts were left embarrassed after Messi made it 5-2 with 15 minutes remaining, picking up a pass from Xavi before beating Casillas at his near post.

Defender Gerard Piqué completed the rout eight minutes from time after he turned to send his own rebound past Casillas from a tight angle.
