Olympique Lyon confirmed Tuesday Brazilian midfielder Juninho will leave the ousted champions at the end of the season.
On Saturday, Juninho, who is suspended for the Lyon's last game of the season, left the field to a standing ovation at Stade Gerland after scoring his 100th goal for the club during a 3-1 home victory against Caen in what was his last appearance.
Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has now confirmed the 34-year-old has been granted permission to terminate his current contract, which were set to expire in 2010.
"We met with Juninho yesterday," Aulas told Lyon's television channel OL TV. "We spoke a lot and he asked us to let him go.
"He can come back whenever he likes but he is leaving the club on June 30. It's likely he will have a final go (with another club) before going back to Brazil."
Juninho sat next to Aulas during the interview, but when he was handed the microphone, the tearful player was unable to speak and had to be comforted by Aulas before being led away.
"It's the time to stop and it's very difficult for me," Juninho said.
The former Brazil international joined Les Gones in 2001 and helped them to win seven successive league titles from 2002-08 before they finished third this season.
