Fernando Torres pens new Liverpool deal

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has signed an improved contract which will keep him at Anfield for another five years.

The Spain international has been a terrace idol from the moment he joined the Reds from Atlético Madrid for £21 million in 2007.

Torres, who hit his 50th goal for Liverpool in only 83 games during the last-day win over Tottenham Hotspur, was already tied to the club for the next four seasons.

Yet the Reds were keen to reward him for two great seasons and have handed him fresh terms for the same period, plus a further 12-month option.

And that will see his wages soar from £90,000 a week to more than £110,000.

"Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better," Kop boss Rafa Benítez told the club's official website.

"Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club.

"He's a special talent, but still has the hunger to improve his game."

Torres joins the likes of Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and Benítez in agreeing new long-term deals.
