Darren Bent 24 |
Newcastle United have now managed just a single win in 17, in all competitions, with their Premier League status remaining in the balance following a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
Alan Shearer's men looked nervous from the off and Sébastien Bassong could have been sent off after a couple of minutes. The Frenchman, who was the last defender, pulled Darren Bent’s shirt and then hauled him down, but referee Mark Halsey missed the incident.
Spurs went ahead on 24 minutes when Bassong intercepted a Luka Modrić pass towards Robbie Keane but the ball ran to Bent, who finished at the second attempt from a tight angle after Steve Harper had beaten away his initial effort.
Bent should have scored his second of the match just before the break, but he could only nod an Alan Hutton cross over from close range.
The hosts continued to look the more likely to force a further breakthrough shortly after the interval and only some heroic defending from Bassong prevented Wilson Palacios from notching his first goal for Spurs.
Substitute Obafemi Martins was somewhat unfortunate to see a fine finish chalked off for handball on 68 minutes before the striker sent a late volley over the crossbar.
