Atlético Madrid's push for Champions League football next season took a hammer blow as they crashed to a 5-1 defeat at Racing Santander and slipped to seventh place.
Santander defender Christian Fernández opened the scoring after nine minutes when he nodded home from six yards after Nikola Žigić had headed the ball onto the bar.
The hosts doubled their lead from another header seven minutes later when Ezequiel Garay met Munitis' floated free kick and sent the ball bouncing past Leo Franco.
The visitor's woes worsened when Mohammed Tchité forced his way past the Atletico defense before poking the ball through Franco's legs on 38 minutes.
Diego Forlán pulled one back for Atlético from the penalty spot on 62 minutes, after Gonzalo Colsa held Sergio Agüero in the area.
However, Pedro Munitis restored the home side's three-goal lead three minutes later with an audacious left-footed lob from the edge of the penalty area.
Žigić wrapped up Santander's victory three minutes from time with a diving header from close range.
