Ferguson blasts 'arrogant' Rafa

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has accused Liverpool counterpart Rafa Benítez of showing contempt toward other clubs and arrogance.

Benítez previously described United’s FA Cup semi-final opponents Everton as a "small club" and Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce has complained about Benítez's behaviour during his side's 4-0 defeat at Anfield last week.

The Spaniard shrugged his shoulders and crossed his hands after Liverpool's second goal, with Allardyce claiming it was "disrespectful and quite humiliating".

"Irrespective of what Rafael Benítez says, Everton are a big club. He called them a small club which just points to his arrogance," Ferguson said at his weekly news conference.

"But arrogance is one thing. You cannot forgive contempt, which is what he showed Sam Allardyce last weekend.

"When Liverpool scored their second goal he signalled as if the game was finished. I do not think Sam deserved that.

"A guy who has worked hard for the League Managers’ Association, looking after young managers and players, he didn’t deserve that with a team that was weakened.

"I’ve never had any of these issues like that. He’s never done that to me — never had a chance.

"In my experience no Liverpool manager has ever done that. It was beyond the pale.

"I think you should respect a manager. I don’t think you’d ever get me doing something like that. You have to have humility."

Ferguson reckons Benítez’s actions are a sign of the power he now holds at Anfield.

He added: "He has played himself into a powerful position. He wants control of all the transfers — for whatever reasons I don’t know but that’s the last thing I’d want. Crikey!"
