Daniel Alves has voiced his relief that he did not sign for Chelsea in 2007 and instead stayed with Sevilla for further season before joining Barcelona last summer.

Chelsea almost snapped up Alves from Sevilla in 2007 but a move failed to materialise as the Andalusian club's president, José María del Nido, rejected two hefty bids from the Blues.

"I was close to signing with Chelsea but luckily it did not happen and I moved to a team that suits me perfectly," Alves told Marca.

The 25-year-old right-back is now looking forward to their Champions League semi-final showdown, with the first leg set to be held at Camp Nou on April 28, and hopes his current side can knock Chelsea out of Europe.

He added: "I am convinced that we are going to give people something to speak about, in the Champions League. Barça are always amongst the favourites thanks to their football and their greatness.

"We are a step closer from our target, which is to make the final in Rome. What we must do is achieve a great work at home and then qualify up there.

"Barcelona are going to be a very tough adversary for Chelsea."
