Champions League drop-outs Werder Bremen and Marseille became the first two clubs to book their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup.
Bundesliga side Bremen booked their place in the last eight after a 2-2 draw with St Etienne, completing a 3-2 aggregate win.
Sebastian Prödl put the visitors ahead after just six minutes when he headed home a Torsten Frings corner from close range.
Bremen doubled the lead in the 28th minute as Claudio Pizarro nodded home a left-wing cross from Mesut Özil to grab his fifth European goal of the season.
The home side reduced the arrears in the 64th minute through Yohan Benalouane, after Bremen failed to clear their lines on three occasions.
And Sébastien Grax then grabbed a last-minute equaliser to earn St Etienne some respect despite their elimination.
At Amsterdam ArenA, Marseille also advanced with a 2-2 draw, beating Ajax 4-3 on aggregate.
Eyong Enoh fired Ajax ahead in the 33rd minute as he slotted home from close range after being fed by Luis Suárez.
But Mamadou Niang put the visitors back in front on aggregate two minutes later. Bakari Koné unleashed a pin point through pass to set up Niang and the Senegalese scored from inside the area with a low shot.
Suárez then showed an absolutely amazing individual action before playing in Miralem Sulejmani for Ajax's second and took the last-16 match into extra-time.
But former Derby right-back Tyrone Mears popped up in extra-time to head his side to the next round.
The Dutch outfit finished the match with 10 men after Bruno Silva was sent off in the last minute of extra time for elbowing Hatem Ben Arfa.
